In 1967, for the first time, he was elected a member of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly on a joint Socialist Party ticket. Again in 1974, 77, 85, 89, 91, 93, 1996 and 2004 and 2007, he was elected ten times Member of Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly. Mulayam Singh Yadav has been the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh thrice from 1989 to 1991, 1993 to 1995 and from 2003 to 2007. From 1982 to 1985, he was a member of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council and an anti-leader party. From 1985 to 1987, the leader of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly has been a rival party. Again from 14 May 2007 to 26 May 2009, the leader of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly has been an opposition party.
